Our Services: Microdermabrasion

MicrodermabrasionMicrodermabrasion is a mini procedure that involves the skin being "sandblasted" by aluminum oxide crystals to remove the horny (top) layer of the skin; dead skin cells.  This promotes the production of new cells in the basal (deepest) layer of the dermis.  It cleans pores very well and may hinder future acne breaks outs if used on a regular basis.  It also stimulates collagen production and networking to even out skin texture and appearance.

For common skin problems such as oily or dull skin, enlarged pores, acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, and mild pigmentary disorders, microdermabrasion is a gentle and effective option for many patients.

This non-invasive procedure uses a precision hand piece to direct a spray of fine, sterile crystals across the surface of the skin. This gently removes the dry and damaged surface cell layers, and leaves the skin smoother and more vibrant. Treatments are provided in a series of sessions, usually at one to two-week intervals, and involves no patient downtime.  Follow-up care may include monthly maintenance sessions.

Microdermabrasion is an excellent pre-treatment for chemical peels and skin care products. By removing dead skin layers, microdermabrasion opens the pores and allows chemical peel products, cell turnover treatments, vitamin infusion serums, and skin lighteners to penetrate deeper into the layers of the skin for better results.

Who can have Microdermabrasion?

Anyone who has or had acne, discoloration, superficial lines and wrinkles, uneven texture, or sun damage can receive Microdermabrasion treatment.

How often can Microdermabrasion be performed?

Microdermabrasion can be performed anytime with sessions at one to two week intervals for best results.

How is Microdermabrasion performed?

First, the face is cleaned with a toner to remove excess oils for better application and penetration. The machine delivers fine, sterile aluminum oxide crystals which exfoliates and sand blasts away dead skin and impurities. During a Micropeel, a chemical peel is also applied to the face. The peel is then removed, and a soothing toner is applied to the face followed by a hydrating lotion and sun block.

What should I expect after Microdermabrasion?

You may feel like you have a mild sunburn or windburn. Your skin may also feel dry and may even peel. This is normal for the treatment. You should regularly apply a high quality moisturizer as well as a sun block. Do not expose your face to sunlight for long periods of time, not even tanning beds. You should not use any exfoliating scrubs or lotions before or after Microdermabrasion for at least 3 days.

Does Microdermabrasion hurt?

Microdermabrasion does not hurt although it may sting a little around the eye area. Your skin may feel warm and appear a little pink in color for the first day after treatment.

Will Microdermabrasion get rid of fine lines, wrinkles, or acne scars?

Yes, in most cases. Very severe scarring may not be lessened by Microdermabrasion alone.  When Microdermabrasion is used in conjunction with a regimen of Retin-A or Glycolic treatments (such as Obagi, Jan Marini, or BelleDerm), treatments produce better results.
