Melasma Facts in Philadelphia

Is your skin discolored from the sun? It may be Melasma
Melasma (also known as Chloasma, or “mask of pregnancy” ) is a common increase of pigmentation that occurs exclusively in sun-exposed areas, in particular on the face. It usually causes three different patterns of symmetrical pigmentation on the face, affecting most commonly the central face (cheeks, forehead, upper lip, nose and chin); or less commonly the cheeks and nose, or the cheeks and jawline.
Melasma usually improves– sometimes to great extent– in response to faithful use of medical grade sun screen, hyrdroquinone which is a bleaching cream used every night, Fraxel laser resurfacing or chemical peels. Sun protection needs to be continued long term in order to reduce the risk of relapse of melasma.
Some facts about Melasma:
· It is much more common in women between the ages of 20-40, especially pregnant women
· Melasma is less common in older women, and is seldom seen in women taking estrogen replacement therapy
· Melasma occurs as a result of excess melanin production in skin cells. The reason is unclear, but scientists say there are several factors including sun damage and estrogen levels.
· Sometime is mistaken for freckles or age spots, which are essentially the same thing, however, melasma spots can be larger and much darker and can take on random shapes.
· Heat can trigger melasma

Getting Rid of Forehead Lines at Jardin Medical Spa in Philadelphia

Does everyone think you're angry?
Dealing with lines that are small and fine is much easier than trying to erase deep grooves. If you see any appearance of a line on your forehead, take care of it now.
The development of fine lines on the forehead is an indication that the underlying structure of your skin cells is damaged. You may notice other indications of this damage if you also have fine lines around your eyes, dry skin and dull complexion. Why does this happen? Your cells are tired. Years of fighting off free radicals created by too much sun, exposure to environmental toxins, and less then healthy eating habits has left them unable to produce normal levels of the structural proteins, collagen and elastin. Without these two proteins your skin begins to become lined, wrinkled, dry and uneven-toned.
One of the most powerful steps you can take is to protect your cells from accumulating any further damage. Simply avoid UV sunlight as much as possible, flush toxins from your body with lots of water and boost your antioxidant activity by eating plenty of brightly-colored fruit and vegetables. Invest in a medical grade sun block and wear it every single day (yes, even when it rains). If you would like to prevent the lines that you have from getting deeper, we suggest you start getting Botox and possibly Fraxel. Botox will prevent the lines from getting deeper and Fraxel laser resurfacing will erase them. The combination is non-invasive with little to no downtime.

We are having a Botox Party on Wednesday February 3rd from 3-8pm. Botox will be discounted! Get rid of your forehead lines! Call to rsvp 484-562-0591

Understanding Laser Hair Removal at Jardin Medical Spa in Philadelphia

How does it work?
Depending on the area being treated, the treatment can take several minutes to an hour. The most commonly used laser uses lasers with a low energy beam and produces one single color light. The beam passes through the patients' skin and gets attracted to the pigment of the hair. The energy from the laser passes down the hair shaft and is absorbed by hair follicles that are in active growth phase. This then results to inflammation and delivers a signal to the follicle indicating that it should move into telegen or resting phase. Not all hair follicles are in the growth phase, so that is why patients need multiple sessions. Results can be visible after one treatment; most patients need about 8 sessions. Maintenance treatments are needed in order for the hair not to grow back. So the efficiency of the laser hair removal depends on the patient and how committed they are to keeping up with it. Keep in mind, maintenance treatments generally have intervals of a year or more, so it is not much of a hassle.

Ask The Doctor

Q: I was shopping with my mother the other day. I was trying on pants, and she told me next time I should not wear lace underwear. Little did she know that I was wearing a thong!! She saw my cellulite through the pants I was trying on. How embarrassing. What can I do to get rid of this cellulite before the summer?

A: Unfortunately, nothing will get rid of cellulite completely. However, there are treatments such as Thermage and Mesotherapy that will help reduce the appearance of cellulite. Nothing is permanent either, so every couple years, you will need to keep it under control by doing treatments. You should exercise regularly, and drink lots of water. I hear that jumping rope helps you circulation as well (which is another cause of cellulite). ~Dr. Mansoury

- It is better to get rid of a pimple by popping it- MYTH!
